Liz, Marion, and Amy smiled encouragingly. “You’ve got this,” Liz said. Ellie wasn’t so sure.

On stage, Mrs. Jameson reviewed the dance steps for Ellie and Paul. Then she suggested they practice on their own.

“I’ll be next door if you need me,” Mrs. Jameson told them. She went out through the stage-left door.

When it closed, the sound echoed through the big auditorium. Ellie and Paul were alone.

“Well,” said Ellie, “want to give it a try?”

Paul shrugged. “Might as well.”

So they began. They were fine through the side-by-side moves. They were a tiny bit out of sync on the triple steps, but nothing terrible.

Then they got to the first swingout. Paul let go of Ellie’s hand and they lost the beat.
